TRENTON
-- Students from various Juvenile Justice
Commission (JJC) programs are participating
in the Philadelphia Flower Show under way
at the Philadelphia Convention Center through
March 9. This year’s theme is “Jazz
It Up.”
“The
opportunity to participate in the Philadelphia
Flower Show is an incredible learning experience
for our students,” said Veleria N.
Lawson, Executive Director, JJC. “The
students learn that hard work and dedication
will be rewarded. Our residents can apply
the skills they learn in the classroom to
help them be productive, law abiding citizens
upon their return home.”
This
is the second year that the JJC has participated
in the show. Over the weekend, the JJC was
awarded second place for its entry in the
Arbor Division. Additional awards will be
announced on Wednesday, March 5. The flowers
used in the JJC’s entry were grown
by the students in green houses as part
of their ongoing horticulture curriculum.
Students helped design and assemble the
entry.
The
JJC is the state agency responsible for
providing juvenile rehabilitation and parole
services. Established in 1995, the JJC serves
to coordinate services and policies affecting
delinquent youth throughout the State. From
prevention to parole, the JJC is a partner
in the entire juvenile justice system, working
with communities to help redirect the lives
of young people. The JJC operates four secure
facilities, fifteen residential community
homes and six day programs. It also oversees
educational instruction and ensures compliance
with state regulations at the county operated
detention centers.
