TRENTON
– Attorney General Anne Milgram and
Criminal Justice Director Gregory A. Paw
announced that an Ocean County man has been
indicted on charges he repeatedly attempted
to bribe a Motor Vehicle Commission clerk
at the Medford Motor Vehicle Agency to issue
driver’s licenses to unauthorized
persons.
According to Director Paw, Kenan Yilmaz,
35, of Plumstead, was indicted by a state
grand jury on a single count of second-degree
bribery and three counts of third-degree
attempted tampering with public records
or information. The indictment was handed
up late yesterday.
It
is alleged that between January and March
2008, Yilmaz repeatedly approached a clerk
at the Medford Motor Vehicle Agency and
attempted to bribe her to issue driver’s
licenses to customers who did not have the
necessary six points of identification.
Yilmaz offered the clerk amounts ranging
from $1,500 to $5,000 for each driver’s
license he attempted to broker. In each
instance, it is alleged that the clerk refused
to accept the money offered and refused
to issue the license.
The
three counts of attempted tampering with
public records or information relate to
incidents in February 2008 when Yilmaz allegedly
offered money to the clerk in an attempt
to obtain licenses for three different customers
and presented her with identifying documents
for each customer that did not meet the
required six points of identification.
The
case was investigated by Detective Sgt.
Mark Wilhelm of the State Police Auto Unit
Document Fraud Squad, working with Investigator
Steven Crane of the Motor Vehicle Commission.
Deputy Attorney General Christine Hoffman
presented the case to the state grand jury.
Second-degree crimes carry a maximum sentence
of 10 years in state prison and a criminal
fine of $150,000, while third-degree crimes
carry a maximum sentence of five years in
prison and a fine of $15,000. The indictment
is merely an accusation and the defendant
is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The
indictment was handed up to Superior Court
Judge Gerald J. Council in Mercer County,
who assigned the case to Burlington County,
where Yilmaz will be ordered to appear at
a later date to answer the charges. The
indictment is linked to this release at
