TRENTON
- Attorney General Anne Milgram and Criminal
Justice Director Gregory A. Paw announced
that a Mercer County man was sentenced today
for stealing more than $12,000 by submitting
a fraudulent automobile insurance claim.
According
to Insurance Fraud Prosecutor Greta Gooden
Brown, Robert C. Eversberg, Jr., 43, of
Titusville, was ordered by Superior Court
Judge Darlene J. Pereksta in Mercer County
to serve three years probation and to pay
$12,300 in restitution to New Jersey Manufacturers
as well as $2,500 in civil fines. Eversberg
was sentenced pursuant to his March 20 guilty
plea to a criminal accusation which charged
him with insurance fraud and hindering apprehension
of self.
In
pleading guilty before Judge Pereksta, Eversberg
admitted that between March 11 and June
12, 2007, he submitted a phony automobile
insurance theft claim worth $12,300 to New
Jersey Manufacturers. Eversberg was involved
in a March 11, 2007 car accident in Hopewell
Township. Eversberg admitted that, the next
day, he falsely reported to New Jersey Manufacturers
and the Florence Township Police Department
that his 2006 Hyundai Elantra had been stolen,
and that it was actually the thief, and
not himself, who had been involved in the
accident. Eversberg subsequently submitted
the claim to New Jersey Manufacturers, which
paid out $12,300 on the claim.
Detective Lisa Egan and Deputy Attorney
General John J. Higgins were assigned to
the investigation. Higgins represented the
state at the time of the plea and at the
sentencing.
This
case was referred to OIFP by an anonymous
tip and the investigation was assisted by
the Special Investigative Unit of the New
Jersey Manufacturers Insurance Company.
Insurance Fraud Prosecutor Brown thanked
New Jersey Manufacturers for its assistance
in this matter.
Prosecutor
Brown noted that some important cases have
started with anonymous tips. People who
are concerned about insurance cheating and
have information about a fraud can report
it anonymously by calling the toll-free
hotline 1-877-55-FRAUD or visiting the Web
site www.njinsurancefraud.org. State regulations
permit an award to be paid to an eligible
person who provides information that leads
to an arrest, prosecution and conviction
for insurance fraud
