TRENTON - Attorney General
Anne Milgram and Division of Criminal Justice
Director Deborah L. Gramiccioni announced
that a Gloucester County woman has been
charged with passing bad checks in order
to purchase insurance and other services
for herself.
According to Insurance Fraud
Prosecutor Greta Gooden Brown, Stacy Perkins,
43, of West Deptford, was charged yesterday
in a 12-count Gloucester County grand jury
indictment with insurance fraud (2nd degree),
attempted theft by deception (3rd degree),
two counts of theft by deception (both 3rd
degree), and eight counts of passing bad
checks (six 3rd degree and two 4th degree).
The indictment charges that
between Jan. 9 and Aug. 10, 2004, Perkins
either issued or electronically authorized
a series of checks to the Allstate Insurance
Company, drawn on several different banks,
knowing the accounts at the banks were closed.
Perkins was allegedly attempting to purchase
automobile insurance valued at approximately
$4,500. It is further charged that Perkins
obtained $14,668 in services from PSE&G,
more than $1,200 in services from Comcast,
and $950 in services from Wells Fargo by
issuing checks that she knew would not be
honored.
Detective George Meyers, Jr., Detective
Christina Fiscella and Deputy Attorney General
Candy Cure were assigned to this case. Cure
presented the case to the Gloucester County
grand jury.
This case was referred to OIFP by the Special
Investigative Unit of the Allstate Insurance
Company, which initially uncovered the fraud
and assisted OIFP in the investigation.
Insurance Fraud Prosecutor Brown thanked
Allstate for its assistance in this matter.
The indictment is merely
an accusation and the defendant is presumed
innocent until proven guilty. Second-degree
crimes carry a maximum sentence of 10 years
in state prison and a criminal fine of $150,000,
while third-degree crimes carry a maximum
sentence of five years in state prison and
a criminal fine of $15,000. Fourth-degree
