TRENTON
– Attorney General Anne Milgram and
Criminal Justice Director Deborah L. Gramiccioni
announced that a Cumberland County man was
sentenced to prison today for using fraudulent
documentation to obtain a New Jersey digital
driver’s license.
According
to Director Gramiccioni, Tyrone T. Gillis,
54, of Bridgeton, was sentenced to five years
in state prison by Superior Court Judge Bernard
DeLury Jr. in Atlantic County. Gillis pleaded
guilty on Nov. 17 to conspiracy to commit
document fraud, a charge contained in a Sept.
10, 2008 state grand jury indictment.
Gillis
admitted that in February 2008, he fraudulently
obtained a New Jersey digital driver’s
license in the name of Alphonso Brown, 47,
of Bridgeton, using Brown’s identifying
documents. Gillis admitted that on Feb. 15,
he took the written driver’s test using
Brown’s identity at the Cardiff Motor
Vehicle Agency in Little Egg Harbor Township.
Gillis failed the test, but he re-took it
on Feb. 22 at the same agency and passed,
again using Brown’s identity.
The
fraud was discovered when Brown entered the
Bridgeton Motor Vehicle Agency on Feb. 28
to add a motorcycle permit to his driver’s
license. An MVC clerk noticed that Brown was
not the man whose photo was in the system
under his name. The photo was of Gillis. The
clerk notified her manager who alerted the
MVC Security and Investigations Unit. The
MVC referred the matter to the Division of
Criminal Justice for further investigation.
The
indictment alleges that Brown knew and consented
to Gillis obtaining a license using his identity.
Brown is charged in the indictment with second-degree
conspiracy, second-degree use of the personal
identifying information of another, and third-degree
tampering with public records or information.
The charges against Brown are pending. They
are merely accusations and he is presumed
innocent until proven guilty.
Detective
Richard Loufik and Deputy Attorney General
Valerie Noto conducted and coordinated the
investigation. Noto represented the Division
of Criminal Justice at the sentencing. Attorney
General Milgram thanked the Motor Vehicle
Commission for its assistance in the investigation.
