TRENTON
– Attorney General Anne Milgram and
Criminal Justice Director Deborah L. Gramiccioni
announced that an Atlantic County woman pleaded
guilty today to stealing $600,000 from her
employer.
According
to Director Gramiccioni, Margarete Roberts,
46, of Galloway Township, pleaded guilty before
Superior Court Judge James E. Isman in Atlantic
County to second-degree theft by unlawful
taking and third-degree forgery.
Judge
Isman scheduled sentencing for May 1. As part
of the plea agreement, Roberts will be ordered
to pay $600,000 in restitution. In addition,
the Division of Criminal Justice will be recommending
a five year prison sentence.
In
pleading guilty, Roberts, who worked as a
bookkeeper for Mansion Builders in Galloway
Township, admitted that between June 28, 2004
and Oct. 23, 2007, she diverted 47 checks
totaling $600,000 into her personal bank account.
Roberts admitted that she took checks intended
for Mansion Builders, made herself a third
party designee, then signed and deposited
the checks into her own account.
Detective
John Neggia and Deputy Attorney General James
Ruberton coordinated the investigation. Deputy
Attorney General Ruberton represented the
Division of Criminal Justice at the guilty
plea hearing.
