TRENTON
- Attorney General Anne Milgram and Criminal
Justice Director Deborah L. Gramiccioni announced
that a Mullica Township man and his wife were
sentenced today for growing numerous marijuana
plants in an indoor cultivation facility.
Warren
D. Unkert, 49, of Mullica Township, was sentenced
to five years in state prison by Superior
Court Judge Albert J. Garofolo in Atlantic
County. Unkert pleaded guilty in September
to a charge of maintaining or operating a
marijuana production facility.
Also
today, Judge Garofolo sentenced Unkert’s
wife, Karen C. Unkert, 50, to serve five years
of probation. She pleaded guilty in September
to a charge of manufacturing marijuana.
The
Division of Criminal Justice obtained an indictment
charging the defendants in October 2007 as
a result of an investigation by the New Jersey
State Police.
The
State Police executed a search warrant at
the couple’s home on Spruce Street on
Jan. 31, 2006. In a large outbuilding on the
property, detectives found about 46 marijuana
plants growing in two rooms on the second
floor.
In
the couple’s master bedroom, police
found five plastic containers of marijuana,
a digital scale, $31,440 in cash, a fully
loaded 9 mm semi-automatic pistol and a .22
caliber starter pistol. They allegedly found
a plastic bag of marijuana wrapped in tinfoil
in the couple’s freezer.
Deputy
Attorney General Daniel Bornstein prosecuted
the case and represented the Division of Criminal
Justice at the sentencing.
