MAYS
LANDING – A Pennsylvania man was brought
before a New Jersey Superior Court judge today
for a first appearance on murder and weapons
charges in the shooting of a shift manager
at the Trump Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic
City yesterday afternoon.
Mark E. Magee, 57, of Norristown,
Pa., is charged with first-degree murder in
the death of Raymond Kot, 57, of Egg Harbor
Township. Magee is also charged with unlawful
possession of a firearm (2nd degree), possession
of a handgun without a permit (3rd degree),
and possession of prohibited weapons (hollow
point bullets) (4th degree).
Magee appeared today before
Superior Court Judge Albert J. Garofolo in
Mays Landing. Judge Garofolo maintained bail
for Magee as set yesterday by Superior Court
Judge William E. Nugent. Magee is being held
in Atlantic County Jail in lieu of $1,122,500
bail. Bail is set at $1 million for the murder
charge, with additional amounts for each of
the weapons charges. Judge Garofolo advised
Magee of his right to an attorney, and Magee
indicated he cannot afford a private attorney.
Deputy Attorney General Yvonne
Maher represented the state in court. She
is assigned to prosecute the case for the
New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice Major
Crimes Bureau.
Magee allegedly shot Kot inside
a card and dice room off of the casino floor
at the Taj Mahal at approximately 3:50 p.m.
yesterday. Magee allegedly fired three shots
from a .38-caliber five-shot revolver, striking
Kot in the torso. Kot was taken by ambulance
to Atlantic City Medical Center, where he
was pronounced dead at 5:24 p.m. yesterday.
Magee was arrested outside
the casino shortly after the shooting by Atlantic
City Detectives Jaimee Moore and Kevin Fair.
They arrested him about 100 feet from the
entrance to the casino. They recovered the
gun, which Magee dropped when approached by
the detectives. No additional details about
the shooting are being released at this time.
The New Jersey State Police
investigated the shooting with assistance
from the Atlantic City Police Department.
The investigation is being conducted for the
New Jersey State Police by members of the
State Police Casino Gaming Bureau, the State
Police Crime Scene South Unit, and the State
Police Major Crime Unit.
