TRENTON -- Attorney General
Anne Milgram and Division of Criminal Justice
Director Deborah L. Gramiccioni announced
today that the Division of Criminal Justice
is accepting applications for the Attorney
General’s Volunteer Associates in Public
Service Program, an initiative through which
attorneys and law school graduates can gain
unpaid experience working on government-related
legal matters.
The Volunteer Associates
Program is open to law school graduates, deferred
associates, furloughed or laid off attorneys
and lawyers re-entering legal practice after
a hiatus. Volunteer Associates will be asked
to work at least 20 hours per week for a period
of at least three months.
The Division of Law began
accepting applications for its volunteer program
in July. To date, 30 attorneys have been accepted
into the program, and more than 50 others
have applications pending.
“This is a great opportunity
for qualified candidates to learn how state
government works, to gain experience in areas
of the law that may be unfamiliar to them,
and to make a genuine difference by working
on legal matters that impact on New Jersey
citizens,” said Attorney General Milgram.
Criminal Justice Director
Gramiccioni said volunteers will be assigned
to work in the Appellate Bureau, the Major
Crimes Bureau, the Office of Insurance Fraud
Prosecutor, and Prosecutors Supervision and
Coordination.
Depending on their areas of
interest and experience, volunteers may be
asked to perform research and write briefs,
work with detectives or assist with discovery
and other pre-trial matters.
Volunteers will also be able
to take part in informal section training,
and to attend seminars offered by the Attorney
General’s Advocacy Institute, a professional
enrichment program.
The Division of Criminal Justice
maintains offices in Trenton, Lawrenceville,
Whippany, and Cherry Hill.
Applicants to the Volunteer
Associates Program should have strong research
and writing skills. In order to apply, prospective
volunteers should send a cover letter -- including
information on preferred areas of the law
and/or a preferred work location -- as well
as a resume, unofficial law school transcript,
a writing sample and two references to the
New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice, c.o.
Assistant Attorney General John-Robin M. Quelch,
Deputy Director, P.O. Box 085, Trenton, New
Jersey, 08625.
Prospective
volunteers can also apply on-line by visiting
the Division of Criminal Justice Web site
at www.nj.gov/oag/dcj/index.html
and locating the Volunteer Attorney Program
icon or going directly to www.nj.gov/oag/dcj/volunteer-associate.htm.
Questions
about the application process may be directed
to NJDCJApplicants@njdcj.org.
Voluntary Associates are subject
to the Rules of Professional Conduct and ethics
standards of the Department of Law & Public
Safety, including the Conflicts of Interest
Law. Assignments will be made in a manner
to avoid potential conflicts of interest.
