IRVINGTON
- The Attorney General’s Shooting Response
Team is conducting an investigation into a
shooting incident in which a state corrections
officer wounded a man who allegedly attempted
to rob and carjack him in Irvington last night.
The
Irvington Police Department received a 911
call about 8:48 p.m. from a man who identified
himself as an off-duty New Jersey state corrections
officer. The officer, later identified as
Darrell Kornegay, a senior corrections officer
at Northern State Prison in Newark, said that
he had been the victim of a robbery and attempted
carjacking and had fired a gun at the robber,
who had fled. Irvington police officers were
detailed to the scene, a parking lot on Springfield
Avenue, which they secured until the arrival
of state investigators.
According
to the preliminary investigation by the Attorney
General’s Shooting Response Team, Kornegay
bought food at the Subway Restaurant at 845
Springfield Avenue and was returning to his
car in the parking lot when he was confronted
by a masked man with a handgun. The man, later
identified as Raymon Scott, 22, of Chapman
Street, Irvington, allegedly ordered Kornegay
to surrender his money and car keys. However,
when Kornegay identified himself as a corrections
officer, Scott allegedly fired at him, missing
him. Kornegay drew a handgun he carries off
duty and fired multiple rounds at Scott. Scott
fled on foot to Springfield Avenue, where
he got into a gold vehicle that went west
on Springfield. Scott was dropped off about
9 p.m. at East Orange General Hospital, where
he was admitted with several gunshot wounds.
Scott
was charged with Attempted Murder, Aggravated
Assault, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon,
Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose,
and Robbery. He remained in the hospital under
guard overnight. Superior Court Judge Francine
A. Schott set bail at $750,000 and ordered
that Scott be remanded to the Essex County
Jail upon his release from the hospital.
Under
an Attorney General Directive, members of
the Attorney General’s Shooting Response
Team, including Deputy Attorneys General and
Detectives from the Division of Criminal Justice
and State Police Major Crime Unit, are dispatched
to the scene to conduct the investigation.
The State Police Crime Scene Investigation
North Unit, Essex County Prosecutor’s
Office and Irvington Police Department provided
assistance. The incident remains under investigation
by the Shooting Response Team and no further
information is being released at this time.
