OCEAN COUNTY - Troopers assigned to the New Jersey State Police Special Operations Section have located and recovered the bodies of two individuals along the Jersey Shore today. The State Police, along with partner agencies, were called to the beaches off Asbury Park and Seaside Park to assist with the report of two swimmers who went missing Wednesday afternoon.

Troopers from the Point Pleasant Marine Station searched the Asbury Park surf with a side-scan SONAR towed by a 23-foot State Police boat. They located the first victim close to 10:00 a.m. in approximately 15 feet of water. After marking the location, the body was recovered by the Asbury Park Fire Department and State Police transported him to the United States Coast Guard Shark River Station.

The body of the second victim was located a few hours later by the same troopers in the surf off Seaside Park. This individual was found submerged in approximately 18 feet of water. State Police T.E.A.M.S. divers recovered that victim and turned him over to the Medical Examiner at the Coast Guard station.

Today's water conditions aided in the search. “If the water is choppy, it churns up debris making it difficult to interpret SONAR images” said Sergeant First Class James Knoeller, Assistant Station Commander for the NJSP Point Pleasant Station. “The troopers on that detail are true experts with the side-scan equipment. Body recovery is never pleasant work, but the families of the victims need closure."

Positive identification of the victims is pending an examination by the Ocean County Medical Examiner's Office and detectives investigating the case.

On Tuesday, the New Jersey State Police's Special Operations Section personnel were also involved in locating and recovering the body of 24-year-old South Amboy resident Paul Chrzaszcz on Tuesday near the Morgan Marina in Sayerville, N.J. The side-scan sonar was also used in Tuesday's search and it's operators were credited with locating Chrzaszcz. Sgt. Chris Wozniak and Tpr. Peter Pfeifer teamed up on today’s recoveries.
