NEWARK – The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs’ annual Consumer Bowl, in which high school students demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of consumer issues in the state, will kick off its 21st competition today.

The competition, in which teams of students answer questions about consumer affairs, begins with the first round of county contests at Voorhees High School in Hunterdon County. A total of 77 high schools are participating in the event.

“The Consumer Bowl plays an important part in educating young New Jerseyans about their legal rights as consumers,” said Attorney General Christopher S. Porrino. “Consumers who know their rights are less likely to fall victim to scams and unlawful behavior in the marketplace.”

“We are proud to continue our partnership with the state’s high schools and local officials in putting on the Consumer Bowl,” said Steve Lee, Director of the Division of Consumer Affairs. “We thank those who help to educate the students and the students themselves for their participation, and we look forward to an energetic and fruitful competition this year.”

The Consumer Bowl begins with county-level competitions, held between January and March, in which local schools face off against each other. The high-school teams have been studying consumer affairs issues and laws with a teacher, who helps the students prepare.

The winner of each county competition moves on to one of three regional meets, held in April. The winners of those regional competitions meet in the Consumer Bowl final on May 16 at the Hughes Justice Complex in Trenton.

The winner of the 2016 Consumer Bowl was Moorestown Friends High School in Burlington County.

Topics covered in the Consumer Bowl include amusement games, fraudulent charities, safe investing, charitable giving and consumer fraud, among others.

The second county competition will be held at Somerville High School in Somerset County on Jan. 20.
