State Police Investigate Motor Vehicle Crash that Killed Jersey City Police Officer

Newark, N.J. - The New Jersey State Police are investigating a motor vehicle crash involving a Jersey City police lieutenant who was struck and killed earlier today on the New Jersey Turnpike.

Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives determined that at approximately 6:20 a.m., Christopher Robateau, 49, of Carteret, N.J., was driving a Toyota Rav4 northbound on the outer roadway of the Turnpike in the area of milepost 104.6 when he became disabled on the right shoulder after being involved in a crash with a Freightliner box truck.  Shortly after the crash, Robateau exited his vehicle and was struck by a Ford Ranger.  He sustained serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

All individuals involved in the accident remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.  There are no charges and no serious injuries were reported.  The right lane of the outer roadway was closed for approximately four hours resulting in minor traffic congestion.

No additional information is available at this time.
