State Police to Test Trooper Applicants

West Trenton, N.J. – The New Jersey State Police are continuing the recruiting process as 2,649 trooper applicants who successfully completed the physical qualification test were invited to take the written examination on September 15th and 22nd. The tests will be administered at the Atlantic City Convention Center and Rutgers University in New Brunswick on both dates. The goal of the present process is to graduate 200 new troopers in July of 2008.

The full hiring process begins with a recruiting drive and application, then continues with a physical qualification test, a written exam, background investigation, and medical/psychological exam before being offered a spot in an academy training class. This cycle marks the first time that the physical qualification test took place prior to the written test. The last recruiting drive was in June of 2005.

Work as a trooper appeals to women and men of all backgrounds, and experience. The current group of applicants invited to the written exam consists of 40% women and minorities. The starting salary for a state trooper is over $55,000, and jumps to more than $62,000 for the second year of employment.

Typically, applicants must have at least 60 college credits and two years of work or military experience, but newly adopted criteria waives 30 college credits for those who have received an honorable discharge after at least two years of active military duty. Additionally, applicants must be U.S. citizens, at least 21 years old and of sound moral character.

The New Jersey State Police offers a comprehensive website packed with information for those interested in a career as a trooper. There are two videos available online and dates/locations of numerous career nights to get in-person guidance. See www.njsp.org for further information.
