COMMISSIONER OF PERSONNEL ROLANDO TORRES, JR. ADDRESSED PBA AND FOP CONVENTIONS TO SHARE INFORMATION OF INTEREST TO LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS

March 8, 2005 - Policemen’s Benevolent Association (PBA) Convention
March 16, 2005 - Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Convention

The Department of Personnel (DOP) continues in its commitment to serving our brave officers by providing up-to-date training, counseling and placement assistance.

The DOP’s training arm - the Human Resource Development Institute (HRDI) has worked closely with the Department of Corrections and other law enforcement agencies to develop a series of courses tailored specifically for law enforcement. These courses are designed to improve performance both on promotional examinations and on the job.

Additionally, to help law enforcement officers cope with stress, while maintaining confidentiality, the Employee Advisory Service and COP-2-COP program are available.

The DOP also provides an Intergovernmental Transfer Program through which officers can change jurisdictions while retaining their civil service status.

Acting Commissioner of Personnel Rolando Torres, Jr. hosted an employee volunteer fair to encourage volunteerism and provide DOP employees with a way to learn about volunteer opportunities with a variety of organizations throughout New Jersey.

Acting Commissioner Torres was joined by guest speakers Sarah Thoma, Executive Director, Governor’s Office of Volunteerism, and DeWayne Tolbert, Regulatory Officer, Department of Banking & Insurance.

Ms. Thoma encouraged the audience to perform acts of kindness in our communities, and suggested we be inspired by what other volunteers have already accomplished. She praised the 1100 State employees who have completed Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training. [link to: www.state.nj.us/njoem ]

Mr. Tolbert shared his experiences and the personal satisfaction he gained from years of volunteering. He credited his parents for having taught him to help others. As his mother said, “If you give a man two fish, he eats for a day. If you teach a man to fish, he’ll eat for a lifetime.” Mr. Tolbert added, “The number one reason people say they don’t volunteer is because no one asked them. So I am asking you to volunteer.”

Acting Commissioner Torres commented that we need to, “Think globally, but act locally.” He asked DOP employees to “give back” to their communities.
