COMMISSIONER OF PERSONNEL ROLANDO TORRES, JR. PROMOTES WELLNESS CAMPAIGN AT THE NJ CONFERENCE OF MAYORS.

April 13, 2005 - New Jersey Conference of Mayors

Commissioner Torres stressed the importance of a healthy lifestyle for public service employees, asking the mayors to work in partnership with the DOP on this initiative.

"By promoting a healthy lifestyle - encouraging our employees to quit smoking, get active, eat right, and get screened for any diseases they are at risk for - we can help our employees to be healthy and ready to perform on the job," said Torres.

The DOP already provides essential services to municipalities, including recruitment, testing, selection, and training. Commissioner Torres pledged to continue to improve these services to help contain costs for municipalities.

The New Jersey Conference of Mayors was founded in 1963 to find common ground on issues impacting their residents. NJCM has since become the largest statewide organization in our Nation to exclusively represent the interests of Mayors to the State and Federal Legislatures and Administrations.

ROLANDO TORRES, JR. SWORN IN BY ACTING GOVERNOR CODEY AS COMMISSIONER OF PERSONNEL

April 1, 2005

Recognizing Torres’ previous contributions towards improving the quality of life for New Jerseyans, Governor Codey praised him for having helped implement historic child welfare reform, auto insurance reform, and fighting employment and housing discrimination. The Governor expressed his confidence in Torres’ ability to take the helm during these tough budget times.

Commissioner Torres in turn thanked Governor Codey and the Legislature for giving him this opportunity and praised the Department of Personnel’s hard working staff.

“The Department is comprised of less than 400 employees who are the guiding hands that help make possible the delivery of the essential services needed throughout the State. This small but highly skilled group is responsible for the personnel actions that impact the nearly 190,000 State and local government workforce,” said Torres. “They are the hub in the wheel that keeps us moving forward.”

Rolando Torres, Jr. is a graduate of Rutgers Law School in Newark. He has been a public servant for nearly 20 years.
