Public service workers once again demonstrate their generosity towards people in need by donating $2,142,844 through payroll deductions and cash contributions. More than 1400 charitable agencies benefited from the compassion shown by nearly 14,000 government employees this year.

DOP is proud of staff member Marilyn Gaines, DOP Campaign Coordinator, who helped lead our department to increase our donations more than 18 percent above last year’s total.

We ask all public service employees to continue their support of the Employees Charitable Campaign in the upcoming year. Your help is vital.

Reflecting the program theme, Excellence through Public Service, public service employees were honored for their contributions in the following categories: Heroism; Community Service; Longevity; Exceptional Service; Professional Achievement; Teamwork and Partnership Achievement; and Customer Service Excellence in County and Municipal Government.

A new award introduced at this year’s ceremony, Innovations in New Jersey State Government, was presented to the Trenton Psychiatric Hospital for successfully reducing overtime costs by $2 million.

DOP’s Commissioner Rolando Torres, Jr., the event’s Master of Ceremonies, addressed an audience of nearly 2,000 government employees, visitors, union and public officials. Said Torres, “Public servants educate our children, defend our neighborhoods, care for the sick and counsel our citizens. These are extraordinary services - and to our public servants, it’s all part of their job. Today’s ceremony is a small way of acknowledging the contributions of New Jersey’s public servants.”

Torres also said, “I want to express my deepest gratitude to the brave military men and women who have been deployed overseas…in particular, those who are currently in the Middle East combating global terrorism. To date, nearly 400 State employees who are members of New Jersey’s reserve component have been activated for service. I can not emphasize enough how proud we are of our men and women in uniform and th e personal sacrifices they have made to serve our country. On behalf of Governor Codey and the State of NJ…thank you for your service.”
