As part of the ongoing Wellness Campaign, the DOP and Health & Senior Services (DHSS), in conjunction with the American Cancer Society, hosted an educational event stressing skin cancer prevention and the importance of early detection.
State employees from the Departments of Law and Public Safety, Judiciary, Public Defender, Agriculture, and Health and Senior Services met at the Hughes Justice Complex to learn ways to protect themselves and their loved ones from the harmful effects of sun exposure.
The program featured the use of a DermaScan machine. This tool showed employees the invisible damage to their skin which they have already suffered from the sun’s radiation.
“With the sun shining, I know you will be taking advantage of the countless outside activities that New Jersey has to offer—such as exploring our State parks, or visiting the New Jersey Shore,” said Commissioner Torres. “We want to ensure that while you are enjoying the beautiful weather, you are also taking precautions to protect yourselves from skin cancer. I thank the American Cancer Society for partnering with the State to educate our employees about how to protect themselves and their families.”
"This Working Well melanoma event gives state employees the information they need to protect themselves, their families and their neighbors from the harmful effects of the sun as they enjoy all the outdoor events of the Fourth of July weekend," said Commissioner of Health and Senior Services Fred M. Jacobs, M.D., J.D.
Tips for Preventing Skin Cancer:
- Select a sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays and offers a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15;
- Wear protective clothing, such as a long-sleeved shirt and long pants;
- Wear a hat with a four-inch brim that shades the face, eyes, and the back of the neck;
- Wear proper sunglasses that protect the eyes from UV rays, reduce the risk of cataracts and protect the skin around the eyes;
- Avoid outdoor activities during midday when the sun’s UV rays are the strongest; and
- Stay in the shade whenever possible, whether under an umbrella, tree, or other shelter.

While addressing members of the NJ Association of Counties, Commissioner Torres discussed cost-effective efficiencies to accomplish our mutual goals – to support and develop our public workforce.
The DOP is implementing its new web-based local government personnel system - CAMPS (County and Municipal Personnel System). CAMPS eliminates the thousands of forms that local governments currently have to send to the Department to be input. Instead, it allows governments to directly enter and access personnel transactions online.
The DOP has embarked on a statewide Wellness campaign to bring vital health information to our public workers. By promoting a healthy lifestyle - encouraging our employees to quit smoking, get active, eat right, and get screened for any diseases they are at risk for we can help our employees to be healthy and ready to perform on the job.
We are premiering this program with State agencies, but we hope to work with local governments as well. There are no costs for this initiative, since we leverage existing resources.

Commissioner Torres stressed the importance of having a well-qualified and well-trained fire service.
To this end, Torres discussed the upcoming entry-level Fire Fighter examination, which the DOP hopes to announce in late summer, pending the Department of Justice’s approval of the test. The Commissioner also pledged to deliver frequent testing opportunities at all promotional levels, to provide access to career advancement.
Torres also urged the firefighters to consider enrolling in DOP’s Human Resource Development Institute’s (HRDI’s) prep course, “Moving Up The Ladder,” to prepare for advancement as Fire Lieutenants/Fire Captains.
