Under the Pinelands protection program, there are nine land-use management areas with varying goals, objectives, development intensities and permitted uses. These management areas are charted on the Pinelands Land Capability Map.

In 2008, Commission scientists completed a study, called the Ecological Integrity Assessment, that evaluated the Pinelands ecology by analyzing landscape and watershed conditions throughout the million-acre region.

Using the information from this study, among other data, the Commission considered various revisions to the boundaries of the Pinelands Management Areas throughout 2008 and 2009.  The goal of this reexamination was to ensure that important natural areas receive appropriate protection.  Presently, the Commission has elected to postpone any further action on the recommended revisions to the management area boundaries.
