The Privacy Study Commission was established by the Open Public Records
Act to study privacy issues raised by the collection, processing, use
and dissemination of information by public agencies, in light of the
recognized need for openness in government. The Commission will recommend
specific measures, including legislation, to deal with these issues
and safeguard the privacy rights of individuals.
The Commission was
given a special directive by Governor McGreevey in his Executive Order
26 to “study the issue of whether and to what
extent the home address and home telephone number of citizens should
be made publicly available by public agencies…” The draft
report on this issue is posted on the Commission’s website: www.nj.gov/privacy.
The Commission now seeks public comment on this special draft report.
(Please note that this draft report only reflects the findings and recommendation
on the narrow issue of home addresses and telephone numbers in government
records.)
