Out of the Hospital

A major public policy shift is underway in the way the state cares for people with mental illness.

Currently, an estimated 1,100 people living in psychiatric institutions have been deemed able to live in the community, if the proper supports were available.

The Public Advocate is working closely with other state agencies and advocates to ensure that people are appropriately moved out of institutions, with strong services and supports, so they can live fully productive lives.

Overcrowding in the state psychiatric hospitals, a scarcity of appropriate community services and the need for culturally-competent services are other key issues the department is exploring and will advance specific recommendations.
