Public Advocate tours rapidly growing Cherry Hill Chinese School, presents school leaders with letter from Gov. Corzine, recognizing Huaxia school's contribution to culture

CHERRY HILL -- New Jersey Public Advocate Ronald K. Chen, who is the son of Chinese immigrants, toured the Cherry Hill Huaxia Chinese School on Saturday, October 10 and said he was "very impressed" by how rapidly the school has grown.

Six years ago, the Cherry Hill Huaxia Chinese School had 20 students. Today, more than 400 South Jersey students gather each Saturday to learn about their language, Chinese folk dancing, painting and martial arts.  The school is a phenomenon, said Chen, who is the first Chinese American ever appointed to a New Jersey governor's cabinet.

Chen presented a framed letter from Gov. Jon S. Corzine honoring the achievements of school officials, including Principal Maosen Sun, Vice Principal Jie Lian, Principal Assistant Michael Stone, Administrator Qinke Zhang, school accountant Le Le, and school Webmaster Ning Zhao.

Chen met with parents, students and local school officials as he toured the school on Saturday. The school uses the facilities of the Beck Middle School at 950 Cropwell Road, Cherry Hill, NJ. He told students and parents about the work the Public Advocate's office does, helping fight for the rights of immigrants, the elderly, the poor and people with developmental disabilities.

More than 1,500 Chinese students - some as young as four years old -- have learned about their culture since the school opened in 2003. In addition to explaining how immigrants can protect their voting rights and access government services, Chen delivered one more important message: "Stay in Chinese school!" He said it is important that students and parents not lose touch with one of the great cultures of the world.
