Disabilities
and Diversity
AmeriCorps
members are a diverse group of individuals. They come from
every age group, all ethic, racial, and religious backgrounds,
and different levels of education. AmeriCorps members live
and serve in cities, in suburbia, and in rural farm communities.
Members bring to the AmeriCorps
programs an exciting variety of talents and experiences. AmeriCorps
members with physical, mental, and learning disabilities also
contribute an important aspect to service. Their participation
supports the fact that people with disabilities can make a
significant contribution to society. The Americans with Disabilities
Act (ADA) has enabled people who may be challenged physically
or mentally to participate in the mainstream of life.
The Corporation for National
Service provides funds to the New Jersey Commission on National
and Community Service to support outreach, recruitment, and
reasonable accommodation to include people with disabilities
in AmeriCorps programs. We welcome people with disabilities
to join our AmeriCorps family.
