Mail Reference Fees

These are the fees for what we send through the mail. We have more records at the State Archives, including microfilm of later vital records.

All fees are non-refundable. For requests outside the U.S., additional postage is required. Email us for a quote. Checks should be made payable to: New Jersey General Treasury

Birth Records, May 1848-December 1914

For $10.00 fee, paid in advance, we will search for a birth record when the month, year and location are provided. Please use form below and fill out required information.

Note that a portion of the $10 fee is earmarked for the conservation and re-imaging of the 1848-1878 birth, marriage and death returns, which have severely deteriorated over time. See Vital Records Conservation for more information.

If the month and year are not known, no more than one two-year search can be requested for fee of $15.00. Please use the forms below and fill out required information.

Fees are non-refundable regardless of whether the requested record is found.

Payment must be by check or money order payable to “New Jersey General Treasury.”

If requesting other records besides vital records, please send a separate check and letter for May 1848-December 1914 vital records request.

Requests must include the husband’s and wife’s names and an approximate date of marriage.

Deaths from June 1878-December 1900 will be searched by fiscal year (i.e. July 1890-June 1891), not calendar year. Please specify fiscal years to be searched, if an exact date is not supplied.

Wills and Estate Inventories, 1670-1952

$10.00 per packet (up to 10 pages), $1.00 each additional page
Provide the name of the deceased, approximate death date, and county or major city of residence. Include file number, if known.

Secretary of State's Deeds, Surveys and Commissions, ca. 1650s-1790s
$5.00 per deed
Provide the name of the grantor and grantee, location (county), and approximate year.

East and West Jersey Proprietors' Surveys, 1680s-early 1900s
$5.00 per record
Provide book and page citation, names of parties, and approximate date and location of land. Some of the surveys are included in our index to Proprietary Warrants and Surveys.

Military Service Records

Revolutionary War
$10.00 per record
Provide soldier's name and other identifying information, such as county of service.

1793 Militia Census, Wars of 1794-1815, and Mexican War (1846-1848)
$5.00 per record
Provide soldier's name, Records of militia, wars of 1794-1812, and Mexican War copied from published transcriptions.

Civil War
$10.00 per record; William S. Stryker's Record of Officers and Men of New Jersey in the Civil War, 1861‐1865 is located on the “Searchable Databases” page of our website. An order form can be filled out and printed based on the results of that search. The State Archives’ Civil War collection includes printed rosters and muster rolls. Be sure to check the Civil War Treasury Vouchers database as well.

World War I
$5.00 each for a soldier's unofficial service record

Only documents owned by the New Jersey State Archives may be certified for legal purposes. When requesting a certification please send a separate check for the copying fee.
