New Jersey Secretary of State Provides Election Day Details

(Trenton, NJ) – Secretary of State Nina Mitchell Wells reminds New Jersey's 5.2 million registered voters about voting options and their rights in the polling place on Tuesday, November 3.

Polling places in New Jersey will be open from 6 am to 8 pm on November 3. The New Jersey Division of Elections recommends that voters with flexible schedules visit polling places during off-peak hours between 10 am and 3 pm. Any voter in line by 8 pm will be given the opportunity to vote.

Voters with complete voter registration information in the poll book will vote using the electronic voting machine . In addition to voting by machine, t here are two types of paper ballots used on Election Day: provisional ballots and emergency ballots.

Any registered voter whose name is not in the poll book, or, who has moved within the county without informing the county election office prior to the election will vote using a provisional ballot.

Emergency paper ballots are used when a voting machine is not operating for any reason. Poll workers may also authorize the use of emergency paper ballots when a district's single machine is in use for an extended period of time with the audio component for a disabled voter.

“There is no reason to be concerned if you are asked to vote with a provisional or emergency ballot. Registered voters can rest assured that every ballot cast in New Jersey will be counted,” said Secretary Wells.

Voters still have time to take advantage of the convenience of voting by mail. Under the new “Vote by Mail” law, registered voters may request a mail-in ballot for an upcoming election, and receive mail-in ballots automatically for additional future elections with one application, as an alternative to voting at a polling place on a given election day.

New Jersey registered voters interested in using the new Vote by Mail option can also visit the Division of Elections' website ( www.njelections.org ) to print out an application in English or Spanish. On the application voters may select options to vote by mail in upcoming elections.

Once completed and signed, the application must be mailed to the County Clerk. The mailed application must be received by the County Clerk no later than seven days prior to an election day in order to receive the ballot by mail. The deadline for the County Clerk's office to receive the mailed application for the upcoming election is October 27, 2009. Alternatively, a registered voter may complete an application to receive a ballot in person at the office of the County Clerk until 3:00 p.m. the day before the election, which is Monday, November 2, 2009.

The County Clerk cannot accept faxed or emailed copies of a Vote by Mail Application, with the exception of Military or Overseas Voters, since an original signature is required. A list of County Clerk addresses statewide is available on the Division's website.
