GAREDEBERCY2009GETTINGTHEPICTUREYOURVISIONWILLBECOMECLEARONLYWHENYOULOOKINTOYOURHEART.WHOLOOKSOUTSIDEDREAMS.WHOLOOKSINSIDEAWAKENS.CARLJUNGFormephotographywritingwithlightisamagicalprocessinspiredbythepaintingsofGiottoVermeerCezanneSeuratandMatisseIsawasachildintheLouvre.Ibecameinterestedinbecomingafull-timephotographerinthemid-1950swhenIgotmyrstsingle-lensreexcameratakingblack-and-whitepicturessuchasBrokenWindowandOST-NinGreenwichVillagewhereIlivedandSaintinFrameandMexicanFamilyonavisittoMexico.WhenIaskedthegreatAndrKertszshouldIbecomeaphotographerhesaidCheramituyesdjDearfriendyouareonealready.Myprofessionalcareerbeganin1964withreportagefortwenmagazineinGermanyanddomusinItalyonDieVerloreneGenerationTheLostGenerationtheupcominggenerationofcreativepeopleinGermanysymbolizedbymyShadowsofChildrenonSwingsandBalletKiss.ThiseditorialexposuregotmeassignmentsfromElleandJardindesModesinParistheSundayTimesMagazineandVogueinLondontheNewYorkTimesMagazineandotherpublicationsinNewYork.Iwasluckyinthatmyself-taughtsenseofdesignanddoingwhatIcallexistentialphotographytryingtocatchthezeitgeistthespiritofthetimeandplaceappealedtosomeofthetopdesignersandartdirectorsofthe60sand70sincludingMassimoVignelliMiltonGlaserGeorgeTschernyWillHopkinsandAlanFletcheraswellastoclientssuchasKnollInternationalIBMSONYColonialPennandothercorporations.AmongtheportraitsIshotwerethoseofartistsAndyWarholinhisnotoriousSilverFactoryJosefAlbersChristoBarnetNewmanandHenryMooregalleristartistBettyParsonsarchitectsNormanFosterandLuisBarraganfashiondesignerBetseyJohnsonandBritishPrimeMinisterHaroldWilsonandhiscabinet.In1974onanassignmentfromPentagramDesignLondonIphotographedTheFaithofGraftitherstbookonthespray-cangraftiphenomenoninNewYorkwithanintroductionbyNormanMailer.Thisledtomyphotographingandwritingelevenadditionalbooksincludingthebest-sellingDesignforaLimitedPlanettherstpopularbookonsolarenergytheaward-winningThisLandisYourLandwithAlexNaarasco-authorandin2005GettingthePicturecelebratingmyretrospectiveexhibitionattheJanCunenMuseumintheNetherlands.ReectingonmyftyyearsasaprofessionalphotographerIwouldliketoquotethegenerousappraisalbytheeminentarthistoriancriticandpoetCorinneRobinsJonNaarisanartistphotographerwithalifetimeofphotographsbehindhim.Heisaphotographerofcompositionsthattransformthestreetsofcitiesthemarksthegraftiontrainsandwallsintoanaestheticexperience.Photographycansimplybeevidenceofwhatwasoncetherearecordofplaceandchange.ButJonNaarspicturesgofurther.TheminutetheyexisttheyreverberateandchangeuponreectionuponthatsecondandthirdlookInsteadofholdingustothequickglancehispicturesstopusinourtracksandrequiretheviewertostopandlooklongandenterintothephotographersuniquesenseoftimeandplaceintoasitweretheeraofhissensibility.JONNAAR
