NJSM's Scouting Merit Badge Days

Geology and Archaeology Merit Badge

Geology at 10:00 am
Archaeology at 1:00 pm

Main Museum Building; $5.00 per person

Are you a Scout in search of exciting and fascinating merit badges? Would you like to learn about the earth, and the history of its human inhabitants? Come to the New Jersey State Museum’s Scouting Merit Badge Day to learn about these fascinating subjects from the Museum’s professional, geologists, paleontologists and archaeologists. Our staff will be on hand to guide you through the Museum’s collection of specimens, tools and maps. Don’t forget to bring your own geology and archaeology collections: we’ll help you identify those, too! Find out what geologists and archaeologists do. Watch live demonstrations and presentations, all designed to help you learn why it is important to study these subjects. Our staff’s expertise will help you fulfill many of the requirements to earn your merit badge. Join us for a day of Scouting fun and learning at the NJSM!

Advance reservations are required but it is not necessary to be a Scout to enroll in the program. For registration or for more information, please call (609) 292-6310, weekdays from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Astronomy Merit Badge

Astronomy at 10:00 am

Main Museum Building; $5.00 per person

The programs are designed to aid in fulfilling the requirements for the Scout merit badge in astronomy. However, it is not necessary to be a Scout to enroll in the program. Groups need attend only one session. Scouts will learn how to find constellations of different seasons, how to use the Big Dipper to find the North Star, how to read a star map, and how to locate stars of different colors. Special attention will be paid to the characteristics of the Moon and planets and the concept of distance within the solar system and beyond.

Noon - 4pm on Sunday
The Friends Shop is closed on Mondays and State Holidays
