A Letter from Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno

At the 6th annual New Jersey Manufacturing Extension Program’s (NJMEP) “Made in New Jersey” National Manufacturing Day on October 6, I was proud to present our New Jersey Business Action Center with the Honor Roll Award from the “Made in New Jersey Program” for continued support of the manufacturing industry in New Jersey. This award follows BAC’s receipt of the President’s“E Star” Award for Export Service presented during an award ceremony in May at the U.S. Department of Commerce in Washington D.C.

The BAC, created in 2010, is a key component of our economic development strategy known as the “Partnership for Action (PFA).”  The PFA consolidated and streamlined the State’s fragmented business attraction, retention and marketing programs into a single point of contact and is comprised of the following four entities:  New Jersey Business Action Center which reports directly to my Office and provides a “one-stop shop” for the business community, applying a proactive, customer-service approach to businesses' interactions with State Government; the Office of the Secretary of Higher Education which works with New Jersey's institutions of higher education to equip an educated workforce for a growing economy; the New Jersey Economic Development Authority serving as the State’s bank; and Choose New Jersey, an independently funded 501(c)(3) business attraction and lead generation organization that markets the State as an ideal location.

I’m extremely proud of BAC’s relentless work over the last eight years in support of the creation and retention of New Jersey’s economic development efforts.  This work includes:

  • Drafting nearly 1,500 proposal letters leading to the development of top projects like Goya (2011), Amazon (2012), Burlington Coat Factory (2013), JP Morgan Chase (2014), Subaru (2014), Sony (2015), Audible.com (2015), New York Life (2016), Bayada (2016), and Holtec (2017)
  • Initiating “best practices” workshops which align the three levels of government (local, county and state) in order to strengthen and encourage economic development efforts and better position New Jersey as a business destination
  • Establishing a corporate campus initiative which helps municipalities address the vacant corporate campuses located within their boundaries in an effort to turn these sites back into revenue generating, job-creating assets
  • Expanding the State Trade Expansion Program (STEP) which has received five (5) consecutive STEP grants from the U.S. Small Business Administration totaling $2,332,624, allowing financial support to 232 NJ small businesses that have projected sales of over $700 million and the creation and/or support of 2,408 jobs in New Jersey
  • Generating over $450 million for the State economy by attracting to the State and lending assistance on over 4,000 motion picture and television projects, including top feature films such as “The Dark Knight Rises,” “The Wolf of Wall Street,” and the “Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” as well as top television programs, such as “The X Factor,” “America’s Got Talent,” and “Cake Boss”

These efforts highlight why unemployment in New Jersey is down to 4.5% – and below the national rate of 5.0%, why we’ve added over 42,400 jobs in the last year – and over 22,000 jobs this summer alone, and why we have more NJ residents reporting to work than in any time in our history (4.33M).  It’s also why I am so proud to have led our State’s business development work over the last 8 years.

For our State’s business owners seeking immediate assistance, as well as all those interested in following their lead, I encourage you to join the over 216,000 business entrepreneurs who have reached out to tap into BAC’s expertise and range of available resources over the last 8 years.  The BAC’s Call Center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST every weekday, and our business representatives, including a Spanish speaking advocate, stand ready to respond to your inquiry within seconds.  For more information, please call 1-800-Jersey-7 or visit nj.gov/state/bac.

I want to thank our business community for choosing New Jersey, and I look forward to continuing our work together to make New Jersey not only a prosperous place to do business, but also a wonderful place to call home.
