The Governor's Office of Volunteerism
was established to support the growth and the development of volunteerism
throughout the State through promotion, coordination and enhancement
of citizen participation.
The concept of a citizen/government partnership
was generated. Citizens, businesses, and community organizations
joined together to contribute their time, service and financial
resources to the partnership, expanding the services in their communities.
Government, through the Governor's office of Volunteerism, provided
the networking, coordination, and leadership assisting the volunteer
programs in their growth and development.
Today, the mission of the Governor's Office of
Volunteerism remains the same. Advocacy, recognition, communication,
and technical assistance form the backbone of the newly re-energized
Office. |
The Governor's Volunteer Awards
were established in 1987 to honor outstanding individuals and groups
whose selfless gifts of time and talents help to improve the quality
of life for the citizens of New Jersey.
The awards are made possible through the dedication
of the Governor's Advisory Council on Volunteerism and Community
Service and the work of the screening and judging committees. Traditionally,
the Governor's Volunteer Awards ceremony is held every spring.
The recipients of past and present awards represent
a varied range of volunteer activities. Each person or group receiving
an award is selected for his or her unique and innovative contribution
to the citizens of New Jersey.
Since the first awards ceremony, more than 200
individuals and organizations have been recognized for their volunteerism
and the commitment to help make a meaningful difference for all
people. We are here today to continue that grand tradition. |
