AmeriCorps Grant on Law Enforcement/Community Relations Provides a Study on Safety during Motor Vehicle Stops.

Citizens of NJ were surveyed to test their knowledge of best practices on motor vehicle stops to help determine the need for motorist education. The survey itself was also analyzed and critiqued for potential changes beyond this study prior to further widespread use and data collection.

Potential AmeriCorps Activities for Law Enforcement/Community Relations Grants

  • Replicating or supporting program models that are underway in New Jersey:
    • Attorney General’s Youth Policy & Planning Boards
    • County Prosecutors’ Office Outreach Activities
    • Stationhouse adjustment training
    • My Brothers’ Keeper and other youth initiatives
  • Facilitating assessment of community resources/asset mapping;
  • Training civilians on how to respond during motor vehicle stops;
  • Hosting, or participating in impartial forums or other settings for the police and community;
  • Partnering with re-entry programs to smooth prisoner transition back to the community;
  • Implementing and managing a statewide internet clearinghouse of best practices on police/community relations;
  • Addressing issues related to a culture of distrust between the community and law enforcement;
  • Implementing a robust data collection component to gauge program success.
