Celebrate the Day and Elevate Your Community through Service with a Purpose!
Trenton, NJ, - Secretary of State Nina Mitchell Wells is encouraging New Jersey residents of all ages to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by participating in a day of community service on or around January 15, 2007.
Wells said the King Day of Service is a positive opportunity to perpetuate Dr. King’s teachings and commitment to bring about social change. She commended AmeriCorps and Learn and Serve programs for embracing the civil rights leader’s work and taking the lead to coordinate a series of community service events, aimed at improving the quality of life for all New Jersey residents. Many of these programs are supported by young volunteers.
“MLK Day is a great way to honor Dr. King and renew efforts to improve our society. It is also a wonderful opportunity to continue our Volunteer NJ campaign which began in November 2006 and use this day to achieve positive change,” said Secretary Wells. “Volunteer NJ is a year-round commitment to volunteer service that provides meaningful community service opportunities for all residents.”
Wells is encouraging residents to take advantage of the holiday by serving as mentors and volunteers in their communities at food banks, shelters, community centers, school-based programs, cultural institutions, hospitals and senior citizen facilities.
Ann Wilson, Chair of the Commission on National and Community Service, commended the Department of State’s commitment to ensuring that New Jersey residents have access to quality community service projects such as AmeriCorps. “New Jersey’s AmeriCorps members are positive role models for all of us who care about Dr. King’s legacy of service,” Wilson said.
The New Jersey Department of State administers AmeriCorps and Learn and Serve America, which provides students, teachers and school districts with opportunities to participate in service-learning projects at school-based programs.
