TRENTON, NJ -Drum Major Awards were presented during the 2009 Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commemorative Celebration at the Patriots Theater at the War Memorial in Trenton.
"We are a better people and a better State because of the legacies and the lessons of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.," said Governor Jon S. Corzine. "The Drum Major Award winners we are recognizing today embody Dr. King's life and ideals and they are to be congratulated for their efforts to advance his dream."
The New Jersey Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Commission Drum Major Awards were established to recognize individuals who are committed to achieving social justice through non-violent activism, encouraging youth to make a difference, preserving constitutional freedoms for all and celebrating diversity.
"This year's winners exemplify the significant contribution and ongoing commitment they have made to their communities and the charitable organizations they dedicate their time to," said Secretary of State Nina Mitchell Wells. "The State of New Jersey is proud to honor these exemplary individuals that have made such a positive difference in the lives of so many."
The Drum Major Award for Justice, presented to Pleasantville Mayor Mr. Ralph Peterson, Sr., is awarded to an elected official who has made significant contributions to improving the path of justice for all people, Mayor Peterson has worked tirelessly in his community to do just that. As the first African-American Mayor of the City of Pleasantville since 1992, Mr. Peterson has been instrumental in the city's ongoing developmental projects, partnering with schools to ensure quality education and job opportunities for our youth and has received numerous awards, commendations and recognitions for his years of service.
The Drum Major Award for Community Service was presented to Haneef Rajun Rashada of Elizabeth. Mr. Rashada's longstanding commitment to addressing community needs made him the ideal recipient for this award. Mr. Rashada is the Executive Director and Principle Founder of Vision Inspires Synergy in Organizations Nationwide Inc. (V.I.S.I.O.N.), works with members of the Abrahamic Faith Traditions, Children of Abraham United in Service and has been appointed to the State of New Jersey Juvenile Justice Commission. Mr. Rashada's commitment to the various programs he belongs to go well beyond the traditional service role.
The Drum Major Award for Youth Impact was presented to Jamal P. Dickerson of Camden. Presented to individuals whose work is committed to inspiring the youth, Mr. Dickerson aims to empower youth on a daily basis, making a positive difference in their lives and the communities they belong to. Currently an Instrumental Music School Teacher and Director of Bands for Camden Creative & Performing Arts High School, Mr. Dickerson has led the band to triumphant victories in several band competitions and festivals.
