Governor Jon S. Corzine and Secretary of State Nina Mitchell Wells continue the celebration of Black History Month with The Secretary of State’s Black History Month Lecture. The February 23 lecture will feature noted civil rights photographer Flip Schulke, a personal friend to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In addition, the Millicent Sparks Troupe will perform a narrative and musical entitled, “We Are Here Because You Were There: A Tribute to Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr." The event will be held on Thursday, February 23 from 5:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at the newly renovated New Jersey State Museum Auditorium, located at 205 West State Street in Trenton. The event is open to the public and press is invited. “Black History Month is an important cultural exchange for our great state,” said Secretary Wells. “Not only does Black History month enrich our communities, it also increases our appreciation for the struggles and triumphs that so many of our citizens have experienced This knowledge and understanding makes New Jersey a better, more dynamic place in which to work, live and raise a family.” A calendar of events throughout the state showcasing the accomplishments, history, literature, culture and art of the African-American experience is available at www.nj.gov/blackhistorymonth. The Auditorium Galleries at 205 West State Street are open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and are closed Sundays and state holidays. Admission is free. Metered parking is available on West State Street. On weekends, free parking is available in parking lots adjacent to the Museum.
