Dear Friends:
The
essence of New Jersey can be found in its rich and diverse history.
Perhaps no period in time better reflects the spirit of this great
state than that of the Underground Railroad. With inspirational
leaders such as Harriet Tubman, who led more than 300 runaway slaves
to freedom, and William Still, one of the legendary networks most
important operatives, the Underground Railroad is an epic American
story of liberty, freedom, compassion, cooperation, and courage.
The
Underground Railroad was a collection of many different people from
many different backgrounds, yet all united together in common purpose
- to ensure freedom for all people. Through unity comes understanding,
and through understanding comes empowerment. It is these principles
that still guide us today.
This
year, New Jersey is celebrating its Underground Railroad heritage
with the Harriet Tubman-William Still Underground Railroad Journey.
Named in honor of two of its most famous figures, this celebration
of our state's history will retrace 180 miles of the legendary freedom
network from Greenwich (Cumberland County) to Jersey City (Hudson
County) and highlight its legacy of liberty every step of the way
I hope to
see you on the Journey as we follow in the footsteps of freedom.
