Dear Friends:
Harriet
Tubman envisioned a life of equality. William Still envisioned
a life of
liberty. Forever linked together by the Underground Railroad,
they shared a dream of
freedom, not just for themselves but for all people.
In
honor of two of the Underground Railroad's most celebrated figures,
the Department of State will celebrate New Jersey's rich heritage
with the Harriet Tubman-
William Still Underground Railroad Journey. Beginning
on Sunday, September 29,
2002, the state and the nation will come together and follow in
the footsteps of history by
retracing 180 miles of the legendary network. Highlighting
New Jersey's role as the
center of a regional UGRR network, the Journey will pay tribute
to all those who
sacrificed, aided and followed this trail to freedom.
As
we retrace the Underground Railroad from Greenwich (Cumberland County)
to Jersey City (Hudson County) and share in the commitment to a
better quality of life for
all people, I encourage you to join us and celebrate New Jersey's
history and heroes
every step of the way.
