Public hearing set on bus fares

By statute, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will hold a public hearing on Thursday, September 11, to discuss the proposed 1998 Zone of Rate Freedom (ZORF) regulation for regular route private bus carriers.

ZORF is a limited percentage change in fares set annually by NJDOT which allows private bus companies to adjust their intrastate fares without petitioning the department for prior approval. Under the proposal for 1998, carriers would be permitted to increase their fares by up to 4 percent or decrease them by 10 percent without NJDOT approval.

Proposed fare changes that exceed the limits allowed under ZORF require a petition to be filed with NJDOT and a public hearing.

The ZORF regulation applies only to private bus companies which operate regular route service. Charter, casino and special bus operations are exempt from the ZORF regulations, as is NJ TRANSIT.

The public hearing will be held between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. in the New Jersey Division of Motor Vehicles’ 3rd floor west conference room located at 225 East State Street in Trenton.

Written comments should be submitted by September 17 to C. Richard Kamin, Director, Division of Motor Vehicles, Attn: Regulatory Affairs, 225 East State Street, P.O. Box 611, Trenton, NJ 08666-0611. Fax Number (609) 633-9366.
