RELEASE: November 2, 2000

Office of the Governor

Governor Whitman Today
Signed the Following Legislation:

S-1554, sponsored by Senator Connors (R-Atlantic/Burlington/Ocean) and Assembly Members Connors (R-Atlantic/Burlington/Ocean) and Moran (R-Atlantic/Burlington/Ocean), designates the State Highway Route 72 bridge over the Manahawkin Bay in Stafford Township as the Dorland J. Henderson Memorial Bridge. The bill also appropriates $2,500 to the Department of Transportation to defray the costs of the sign with the bridge's new name.

The bridge's new designation honors Dorland J. "Don" Henderson's service to the State and his achievements. An African-American, Henderson lived in Newark and died in 1996 at age 96. Overcoming racial discrimination early in his career, Henderson rose to chief engineer of the Department of Transportation's Electrical Bureau and Division of Traffic Engineering. Throughout his career, Henderson strove to create a work environment free of racial distinctions.

In 1958, Henderson designed the lighting system for the Route 72 bridge, a plan which is known for its innovative and classical design.
