Route 1&9 affected by Newark chemical leak

Transportation Commissioner James P. Fox today urged motorists to avoid Routes 1&9 between Delancey Street and Raymond Boulevard in Newark, due to a chemical leak on an adjacent property has caused intermittent closures on that section of the roadway.

“DOT officials have been on the scene all morning, working and cooperating with the Newark Fire Department, State Police, and Department of Environmental Protection officials to address this serious situation,” said Fox. “The highway was closed at 9:00 am, and since that time northbound lanes have been reopened. One lane of southbound traffic is being maintained.

“The Department expects to close the highway in both directions for a period of time today in order to enable hazardous materials teams to remove the chemical from the property adjacent to the highway,” the Commissioner said. “I strongly urge motorists to avoid Route 1&9 today.”

When the detour goes into effect, northbound lanes on Route 1&9 will be detoured from Delancey Street, to Roanoke Street, to Doremus Avenue, and back onto Route 1&9.

The southbound detour will make use of Raymond Boulevard, Route 21, and I-78. Both detours have been posted. DOT personnel will be monitoring the traffic situation throughout the day.
