DMV consolidates driver
testing centers and road test sites

The New Jersey Division of Motor Vehicles will next week begin consolidating operations at several Motor Vehicle Services facilities across the state that conduct written driver testing and road tests, Transportation Commissioner Jamie Fox announced today.

“As the DMV goes through a process to redefine its mission to provide the highest level of security and the best customer service possible, the agency is making short-term changes to evaluate how best to utilize limited resources and still conduct its daily business,” Fox said.

Beginning Monday, July 15, eight sites throughout the state will close while the DMV evaluates their operations. The sites include driver testing centers at which written tests are administered and road test sites at which drivers are examined on their ability to operate a vehicle.

DMV Director Diane Legreide said the decision to consolidate was made to provide a better level of security for the tests and because some driver testing and road test facilities are experiencing staffing shortages.

“The public must have confidence that the tests are being administered securely and fairly. At certain sites I believe we do not have an adequate level of staffing to ensure good quality control,” Legreide said. “By consolidating some of these services we have an opportunity to review where our resources are best used and where we use technology to help us meet customer demand.”
