NJDOT transfers Route 124 to Maplewood Township
$1.5 million grant awarded
Transportation Commissioner Jamie Fox today joined state and local officials to mark the transfer of Springfield Avenue (Route 124) to the jurisdiction of Maplewood Township, and awarded a $1.5 million grant to the Township to fund improvements to the roadway.
"We are here to turn over control of this roadway to the Township so they can turn Springfield into a destination, not just a thoroughfare," Commissioner Fox said. "Time has proven that when we invest in our downtowns, commerce and opportunity follow."
Maplewood Township will take over the entire two mile portion of Springfield Avenue that runs through the Township. NJDOT will be providing $1.5 million in funding for improvements, and Essex County will be providing $80,000. These funds will be used to create pedestrian-friendly amenities, replace sidewalks and curbs, and provide park benches, trees, lighting, and information kiosks.
"Over the years, Springfield Avenue has lost a number of businesses to strip malls and shopping center on our highways. Under the leadership of Mayor DeLuca, and with the help of people like Senator Codey, that’s about to change," Fox said.
