Route 9-Nacote Creek bridge opens to traffic

(Galloway Township) – Deputy Transportation Commissioner Jack Lettiere today joined Senator Bill Gormley and other State and local officials to cut the ribbon for the new Route 9 bridge over the Nacote Creek in Port Republic and Galloway townships, Atlantic County.

"Route 9 is a major South Jersey corridor linking the shore communities to the rest of our state and replacement of the 80-year-old Nacote Creek bridge was overdue," said Deputy Commissioner Lettiere said. "This project had been on the books for 24 years. It is just one of a number of bridges that we are working to replace in order to keep New Jersey’s people and economy moving."

"I am extremely pleased to witness the completion of this important project," said Assemblyman Frank Blee, who thanked local business owners for their support during construction. "Any infrastructure improvement that will enhance the quality of life for our residents and the thousands of visitors to our region is always greatly appreciated. I am confident that this enhancement will be a great benefit to our local economy for many years to come."

The $12.1 million project, which began in May 2001, replaced a structurally-deficient bridge built in 1922. The original bridge was one of two bridges on the entire State highway system that had weight restrictions (the other is the Route 9 Bass River bridge, which is also being replaced). The new bridge is 500 feet in length and has no weight limit.
