NJDOT awards $ 525,000 for I BOAT NJ
maritime projects

(Trenton) Commissioner Jack Lettiere today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will award $525,000 for six public boating projects. The I BOAT NJ program benefits the boating public by promoting and improving New Jersey's marine industry.

"The I BOAT NJ Program enables NJDOT to improve the marine industry and boating community by funding projects devised by those who best understand the industry's needs," said Lettiere.

The I BOAT NJ grant program is administered by the NJDOT Office of Maritime Resources and funded by the Fiscal Year 2003 boater registration fee increase.   The program, which NJDOT adopted in July 2004, returns fees paid by the boating community in the form of grants.

NJDOT awards I BOAT NJ grants based on criteria including projects' direct impacts to the statewide boating community, benefits to the local community, community involvement, economic costs/benefits and the extent to which projects fulfill the I BOAT NJ program mission. Funded projects are beneficial to the general boating public and are directed at planning, developing, constructing, improving, advocating or otherwise assisting the New Jersey boating and marine trade industry.

NJDOT selected the following projects for the second cycle of grant funding:

Passaic River Rowing Association: Public Access Floating Dock, Riverside County Park South, Kearny, Hudson County.

Waterfront Marine, Somers Point, Atlantic County: Haul Out/Wash Facility

Borough of Atlantic Highlands, Monmouth County : Electrical service replacement and upgrade of electrical boxes on piers.

Ocean County College: Development of the J. Phillip Citta Community Sailing Center, Mill Creek County Park, Berkley Township, Ocean County

New Jersey State Police Marine Services Bureau (2 projects) : Safety equipment and education; NJ Boating Basics Guide.

The awards are part of the I BOAT NJ grant program's second round of funding. NJDOT in April 2005 awarded $ 2,565,335 for 18 maritime projects throughout the state.
