NJDOT announces I-278
resurfacing project in Union County

(Trenton) - Commissioner Kolluri today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will resurface I-278 from east of Routes 1 & 9 to the approach of the Goethals Bridge in the cities of Linden and Elizabeth, Union County. The $2.5 million project is scheduled to begin August 27 and completed by late November.

“Rehabilitating Route 278 will reverse the cracking and separating that the road surface developed as a result of winter weather and heavy use,” said Commissioner Kolluri. “This $2.5 million project will greatly improve safety and provide motorists with a smoother roadway surface.”

This pavement preservation project will extend the pavement’s service life by approximately 15 years. Construction will primarily take place during off-peak travel hours in order to minimize traffic impact. Temporary detours and lane closures may be necessary. In addition, NJDOT will close individual ramps overnight in order to resurface the ramps. A detour route will be provided during all ramp closures.

NJDOT will install variable message signs to inform motorists of changes in traffic operations during construction. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website, www.njcommuter.com for project updates.
