NJDOT to replace NJ TRANSIT bridges and improve intersections in Newark

(Trenton) - Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will replace the Third Street, Fifth Street, Sixth Street, Seventh Street and Roseville Avenue bridges over the NJ TRANSIT Morristown line in Newark.

“In partnership with NJ TRANSIT, NJDOT is committed to improving the condition of our state’s bridges,” said Commissioner Kolluri. “We will replace the NJ TRANSIT bridges and improve traffic signals, drainage and pedestrian safety in a manner that minimally impacts traffic conditions and mass transit operation.”

The $13.5 million project includes drainage improvements, resurfacing, sidewalk installation and curb placement on the approaches to the Third Street, Fifth Street, Sixth Street, Seventh Street and Roseville Avenue bridges. In addition, NJDOT will improve traffic signals at these bridges and at the intersections of Roseville Avenue and Orange Street, Roseville Avenue and Seventh Avenue and Orange Street and Sixth Avenue.

NJDOT will begin construction on October 15 and will replace the Fifth and Seventh Avenue bridges starting in late December. NJDOT will replace each bridge individually, temporarily close each street on which a bridge is being replaced and implement local detours. Construction may impact nighttime train operations and NJ TRANSIT bus service at Roseville Avenue. The project is scheduled to be completed in November 2010.

From October 15 to October 22, the following detours will be in effect on Seventh Avenue eastbound from Roseville Avenue to Seventh Street:

• Motorists bound for Seventh Avenue eastbound should turn right onto Roseville Avenue, left onto Orange Street, left onto Seventh Street and right onto Seventh Avenue.

• From Roseville Avenue southbound, motorists should turn left onto Orange Street, left onto Seventh Street and right onto Seventh Avenue.

• From Roseville Avenue northbound, motorists should turn right onto Sixth Avenue, right at Sixth Street and left onto Seventh Avenue.
