NJDOT announces upcoming street closures in Bridgeton

Route 49 Cohansey River Bridge project advances

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced the upcoming individual closures of five local streets as part of the Route 49 Cohansey River Bridge project in Bridgeton, Cumberland County.

NJDOT will close these local streets in order to reconstruct their intersections with Route 49 in Bridgeton. Atlantic Street, South Pearl Street (Route 77), Fayette Street, Laurel Street, and Water Street will be individually closed and detoured for one weekend each. Access to all residences and businesses will be maintained during the closures.

Beginning Saturday, April 19, NJDOT will close the south side of the Route 49 and Atlantic Street intersection. During the Atlantic Street closure, motorists will turn onto Giles Street, onto Commerce Street, and back to Atlantic Street. Motorists are advised to follow all posted detours in the area. The remaining local streets will be closed during the following four weekends.

The eastbound side of Route 49 over the Cohansey River has been closed since January. During the eastbound closure, motorists are diverted to the westbound roadway, which is temporarily reconfigured to provide one lane in each direction.

The $14 million project will replace the existing Route 49 Cohansey River Bridge and its approaches from milepost 25.2 to milepost 25.7. NJDOT will widen the travel lanes, upgrade traffic signals and roadway lighting, replace the drainage system and install new sidewalks and pedestrian crosswalks. NJDOT is scheduled to complete the project in June 2009.

NJDOT has installed Variable Message Signs along Route 49 and will advise motorists of upcoming traffic pattern changes and construction schedules. Motorists can visit www.njcommuter.com for additional information.
