NJDOT to replace bridge decks on North Bridge Street over I-287 in Bridgewater

(Trenton) -- Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) on Friday, May 9 will begin the reconstruction of the North Bridge Street bridge decks over I-287 in Bridgewater Township, Somerset County.

“This much-needed bridge deck replacement demonstrates NJDOT’s commitment to improving our transportation infrastructure and the quality of life for Somerset County residents and motorists,” said Kolluri.

The $2.8 million project will replace the two deteriorated bridge decks over I-287 northbound and southbound in Bridgewater. North Bridge Street will be closed to all vehicular traffic and detoured during construction, although pedestrian access to the bridge will be maintained. The following detours will be implemented:

• Beginning Friday, May 9, northbound traffic on North Bridge Street will be detoured via Route 22 westbound to Commons Way to Prince Rodgers Avenue, which intersects with North Bridge Street.

• Southbound traffic on North Bridge Street will be detoured via Prince Rodgers Avenue to Commons Way to Route 202/206 southbound to Route 22 eastbound to Grove Street to North Bridge Street.

Route 287 may be closed in both directions from Monday to Thursday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., from Friday at 10 p.m. to Saturday at 6 a.m., from Saturday at 10 p.m. Sunday at to 7 a.m., and from Sunday at 10 p.m. to Monday at 5 a.m.

Construction is scheduled for completion in late October 2008.

NJDOT has installed Variable Message Signs in the area to inform motorists of the closure. In addition, NJDOT will post directional signs throughout the detour route to guide motorists. Real time travel and construction information is available online at www.njcommuter.com for emergency information.
