NJDOT announces detour

for Route 47 bridge over Mantua Creek

(Trenton) – NJDOT officialsq today announced a detour for the construction of the Route 47 bridge over Mantua Creek as part of the ongoing $6.9 million congestion relief project on Route 47 in Glassboro, Pitman and Washington in Gloucester County.

Starting Saturday, February 28, Route 47 southbound will be detoured onto Holly Avenue westbound (CR 624) to Woodbury Avenue/Glassboro Road southbound (CR 553) to Route 47. Route 47 northbound will be detoured onto Woodbury Avenue/Glassboro Road northbound (CR 553) to Holly Avenue eastbound (CR 624) to Route 47. The detour will remain in place until June 30, 2009.

This detour is required for the demolition and reconstruction of the Route 47 Bridge over Mantua Creek. This detour will enable NJDOT to complete the project in November 2009, five months earlier than originally anticipated. The project began construction in August 2008.

NJDOT will replace the Route 47 Bridge over Mantua Creek with a wider structure that will accommodate a six-foot sidewalk on both sides of the structure. NJDOT will improve the intersections of Route 47 and Chapel Heights Avenue and Route 47 and Holly Avenue. Route 47 will be widened to accommodate a 12-foot through lane, a 10-foot shoulder, and a dedicated left-turn lane in each direction between milepost 64.9 and milepost 65.3.

The intersection improvements will include new traffic signals at Route 47 and Holly Avenue and Route 47 and Chapel Heights Avenue. NJDOT also will install new auxiliary left-turn lanes at Holly Avenue and Chapel Heights Avenue. Additional work will include pavement rehabilitation and the installation of a new storm water detention system.

NJDOT will utilize variable message signs to inform motorists of any change in traffic patterns during construction. Real time travel and construction information is available online at www.511nj.org.
