NJDOT announces Route 1
Millstone River Bridge replacement

(Trenton) – The New Jersey Department of Transportation today announced the replacement of the Route 1 Bridge over the Millstone River in West Windsor, Mercer County and Plainsboro, Middlesex County. The $18.8 million construction project is part of Governor Corzine’s plan to stimulate New Jersey’s economy by investing in construction projects that will create jobs and improve our roads, bridges and transit system.

“This important project demonstrates NJDOT’s commitment to improving the State’s aging bridge infrastructure and increasing public safety,” said Governor Corzine. “We are putting people to work and mitigating the effects of the national recession.”

On Friday, July 17, NJDOT is scheduled to begin preliminary operations for the replacement of the Route 1 Millstone River Bridge. The project will require overnight, single and double lane closures on Route 1 northbound and southbound from Sunday to Thursday from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. with single lane closures on Saturday and Sunday mornings permitted until 9 a.m. Advance utility relocation and tree clreaing operations began in April.

On the evening of July 24, northbound traffic will be shifted to the right and southbound traffic being shifted to the left. The use of precast concrete bridge components will enable NJDOT to complete the project without major impacts to traffic. Construction work requiring lane closures will be done overnight in order to minimize impacts on Route 1 traffic. The project is scheduled for completion in October 2010.

The project will completely replace the bridge superstructure over the Millstone River with a new, concrete bridge that will feature shoulders and two sidewalks. As part of the project, NJDOT also will repair and improve Route 1 between Harrison Street in West Windsor and Princeton-Plainsboro Road in Plainsboro.

Variable message signs will be installed on Route 1 to inform motorists of changes in traffic operations during construction. Construction information and real-time traffic updates are available at www.511nj.org

Governor Corzine’s statewide infrastructure investment plan will help stimulate the economy, improve transportation assets and create jobs through investment in infrastructure. In November 2008, Governor Corzine released a report entitled, Stimulating New Jersey’s Economy: A Plan to Invest in Our Infrastructure and Create Jobs, which provides details on the initiative as well as transportation improvement projects statewide.
