Route 36 to be resurfaced in northern
Monmouth County

(Trenton) - A major roadway resurfacing project will begin next week to improve two sections of Route 36 in Monmouth County.

One section of the work will be in the Borough of Sea Bright, while the other area to be resurfaced is in the townships of Hazlet and Middletown and the boroughs of Keansburg and Union Beach.

“Route 36 carries high volumes of summer shore traffic to Sandy Hook, Sea Bright and other popular destinations, helping drive the area’s economy, so this rehabilitation project will benefit a lot of recreational travelers and the businesses they patronize,” said Transportation Commissioner James Simpson.

On Monday, March 14, NJDOT’s contractor, Stavola Contracting Co., is scheduled to begin resurfacing operations on Route 36 at Rumson Road in Sea Bright Borough, and work northward. Resurfacing operations in Sea Bright will require daily, single lane closures on Route 36 with alternating traffic from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The work in Sea Bright, between mileposts 9.3 and 11.3, is scheduled to be finished in approximately 5 weeks, after which the contractor will shift the construction inland before the summer season begins.

In mid-May the contractor will begin resurfacing Route 36 southbound from west of Sea Breeze Avenue in Middletown, milepost 16.9, to the vicinity of Ocean Avenue in Union Beach, at milepost 22.3. This work will extend through Middletown, Hazlet and Keansburg. A half-mile of Route 36 northbound will resurfaced in Union Beach, as well. This work will require single lane closures on Route 36 during off-peak and overnight hours, with one travel lane maintained at all times.

The $5 million project will also make surface repairs to the Route 36 bridge structures over Comptons Creek, East Creek and Waackaack Creek. Upgraded signage, roadway striping and guide rail will also be provided. The project is scheduled to be fully completed by this fall. All work is weather dependent.
