NJDOT announces Route 42 improvements
Southbound highway to be widened between Leaf Avenue and Route 55

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced the start of a safety improvement and congestion relief project on Route 42 southbound in the boroughs of Bellmawr and Runnemede and the township of Deptford.

“These improvements represent a cost-effective solution to help reduce congestion and increase public safety on this important stretch of Route 42,” NJDOT Commissioner James Simpson said.

NJDOT’s contractor, Haines and Kibblehouse Inc., began mainline construction operations this week, shifting all Route 42 southbound travel lanes to the left (east) from just south of Leaf Avenue to just north of the Route 55 interchange. Four travel lanes will be maintained on the highway during peak-period hours, with the three left-most lanes being reduced in width from 12 feet to 11 feet. The right shoulder will be closed with construction barrier to establish the new work zone. The widening work will be accomplished without any lane closures.

To eliminate a bottleneck condition on Route 42 southbound in this location, NJDOT will widen the highway to feature five travel lanes from the Leaf Avenue on-ramp thru the Route 55 interchange. Route 42 southbound currently carries four travel lanes and a deceleration lane north of the Leaf Avenue exit, where the highway reduces down to four travel lanes. The highway will be widened utilizing the existing shoulder.

Upon completion of the roadway widening, NJDOT will resurface Route 42 southbound within the project limits and make deck and joint repairs on the bridges over Big Timber Creek and the New Jersey Turnpike. These construction activities will require overnight lane closures Monday through Thursday, between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. the following day. No lane closures are planned on weekends.

Variable message signs will notify Route 42 motorists of all traffic pattern changes. The $3 million project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2011.

The precise timing of the work mentioned in this advisory is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
